Carmen’s passion for immigrant rights stems from her own experience with the U.S. immigration system after her family left Costa Rica when she was two years old. Determined to pursue Immigration law, Carmen was among the first cohort of Long Island Immigration Advocacy Fellows at Hofstra Law. During her time as a summer intern at both The Safe Passage Project and CARECEN, she worked directly with clients to help them apply for immigration relief. Carmen was also a student intern at Hofstra’s Deportation Defense Clinic, and with the help of Professor Alexander Holtzman, a 2016 Justice Fellow, won asylum for a survivor of domestic violence. Carmen is excited to continue this work as a Fellow at New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG), working with unaccompanied children.
