After migrating to the U.S. from Colombia, Monica learned of the substantial need for compassionate high-quality legal assistance. Hoping to better understand intersectional issues of gender, migration, and violence, she transferred from Hillsborough Community College to pursue a dual degree in Psychology and Peace & Justice Studies at Wellesley College. During her undergraduate studies, Monica worked with the Wellesley Centers for Women, UNDP in San Jose, Costa Rica and the Boaz Trust in Manchester, U.K., organizations focused on achieving gender equality and promoting human rights, respectively. As an Albright Fellow, she spent the summer of 2018 in Tampa, Florida working on a human trafficking initiative.
