Statement on NYC Asylum Seekers Navigation Center

Today, New York City’s Asylum Seekers Navigation Center opened its doors in midtown Manhattan to help support migrants bussed to New York City from Texas and Arizona.

Immigrant Justice Corps believes that all immigrants deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. There is a humanitarian crisis at the southern border that requires the implementation of a humane policy that allows migrants to seek safety and protection in the United States. Instead of supporting this vulnerable population, the governors of Texas and Arizona are cruelly bussing thousands of individuals and families to East Coast cities to avoid providing them with the services they need. This is unconscionable.

Many of the new arrivals have suffered horrendous conditions for weeks in Mexico and along the border without adequate care or access to support. We commend New York City for welcoming asylum seekers and for doing everything possible to connect vulnerable migrants with social and legal resources.

IJC will deploy legal staff to the Asylum Seekers Navigation Center to assist with this humanitarian effort. We are committed to working with the Mayor’s Office of Immigration Affairs to serve vulnerable communities in need.
